Today marks the end of Carnival season. Tomorrow the Christian world begins the 40 day season of Lent. Because of COVID restrictions, this years Carnival/Mardi Gras has been remarkably quiet.
BBC published two neat photo spreads showing how residents of Rio and New Orleans are coping with the changes. The identity of both of these cities are so intricately linked to the Carnival celebration.
Around here, we celebrate “fat Tuesday” a bit differently, with the Pennsylvania Dutch tradition of Fasnacht Day.
As a kid, I discovered that not everybody in Maryland recognizes this special day. But it’s a day to eat donut-ty pastries, so it is catching on!!
When I was 11 or so, Grandma Rudy and I made fasnachts from scratch…deep fried and all. It was fun and memorable, but a pain in the ass! From that point on it was my job to acquire the box of Munchkins from Dunkin’.
